Game Night

I'd rather have replayed Tag...

A confused Max (Jason Bateman) and Annie (Rachel McAdams) - from Game Night

Here's what I've been watching and playing over the last seven days...

MOVIES

Game Night

Movie summary: A group of friends who meet regularly for game nights find themselves entangled in a real-life mystery when the shady brother of one of them is seemingly kidnapped by dangerous gangsters. (IMDb)

Considering how much I'd enjoyed Tag (outside of Leslie Bibb's character almost derailing it), another movie about adults playing a game, and Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves, which the team behind this film were also responsible for, and just how much positive reaction it'd received, my expectations were high for Game Night, and were unfortunately not met.

While it does have a sprinkling of moments that are genuinely brilliant, I found myself more bored than anything, not really caring about the characters or the story because I don't think the movie did enough to get me invested in them outside of 'look how funny they can be'.

Admittedly, there's also some great visuals in Game Night, with what looked like tilt-shift photography making locations look like board game models and some inventive and enjoyable camera moves that were far more interesting than the story.

I don't think Game Night is a bad film, as a movie with as many great moments as it has could never be considered bad in my view, but the rest of the film just couldn't maintain that momentum and link everything together as well as it could've been done. [5/10]

GAMES

My second time through the Nebula with Aliya Elasra is complete and almost as enjoyable as the first time around, which is quite the achievement for a narrative game when you know where the story is leading - possibly in my top ten games of all time and that's not a joke.

Another contender for my top ten has been finished off as well, although I plan to do some of the side stories now, which I've never done before, to keep things going - also thinking about making a YouTube playthrough for this one as I reckon I could get through the trilogy pretty damn quickly...

Also playing: Baldur's Gate 3, Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020)

TV

Frasier, Season Eight

A real switch-up for the show, with Niles and Daphne having to navigate out of their relationships to finally end up together, which didn't drag on as long as I remembered, but still maintaining the show's quality level for now - I was also grateful to re-discover that it wasn't this season that Daphne's family started to really drag the show down.
