Here's what I've been watching and playing over the last seven days...

MOVIES

No movies watched or re-watched over the last seven days thanks to 007 First Light and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt taking up my time.

Oh, and trying not to melt in this sodding heatwave...

GAMES

Nobody Wants to Die

Game summary: Lead the investigation using advanced technology, as Detective James Karra who risks it all in pursuit of a serial killer targeting the city’s elite. (Steam)

Nobody Wants to Die is the only game that I can remember lying to the player as consistently as this one does, and in a way that makes me not want to ever play it again.

You see, there'll be plenty of occasions in this game where it'll tell you that your choices matter and will influence how the game plays out.

This is a total fabrication and almost the entire thing is on-rails and you might get a line or two of dialogue changing at most - I finished playing one day after making a certain choice and, picking up the next day, wondered if the game was bugged and had registered the other choice...

Then there's the ending I got - yes, there are multiple endings, but very, very few choices affect which one you get - which was not only abrupt, but so incoherent and confusing that I had to look up what happened.

Thankfully, lots of other people seemed to be just as lost as I was, and I was relieved that I wasn't losing my senses.

Once you add in the jankiness of the crime scene investigations, where you can move time back and forth to see what happened - cool visually, but badly implemented - and there's not much of a gaming reason to try this out.

Not to be entirely negative, this is a truly gorgeous and atmospheric game with some stunning scenes to witness, and the voice acting for James Karra (Phillip Sacramento) and Sara (Keaton Talmadge) is truly exceptional.

My advice if you want to try this: get a guide handy to speed through the crime scenes and pick the ending you want, and luxuriate in the stunning audio-visual world of the game, because it's not really worth more than that.

In the end, all Nobody Wants to Die has going for it is some incredible visuals and great voice acting, but everything else is sub-par or worse. [3/10]

Star Wars: Resistance, Season 1, Episodes 1-5

Episode 1, “The Recruit, Part 1”

A decent start, and I like the art style – aside from the humans, that is.

Also, I’m not sure how old Kaz is supposed to be, or how he became a pilot… [6/10]

Episode 2, "The Recruit, Part 2”

A good episode that really flew by – and the smooth animation really made the race look fantastic. [7/10]

Episode 3, "The Triple Dark”

Seriously, how old is Kaz supposed to be? He acts like an immature idiot for most of this episode, which really isn’t endearing him to me. [4/10]

Episode 4, "Fuel for the Fire”

Kaz learned absolutely nothing from last time out and continued to be an immature idiot only correcting his fuck-up at the last moment… again.

Seriously, if the structure of these episodes is just going to be Kaz is an idiot, he screws up, then just about fixes things, I’m going to get very bored of this show very quickly. [3/10]

Episode 5, “The High Tower”

Now this is how a bumbling character like Kaz should be depicted, by showing him as a good person who means well, but is lacking the personality and composure of a classic TV show lead. [7/10]
