Black Swan
Movie summary: Nina is a talented but unstable ballerina on the verge of stardom. Pushed to the breaking point by her artistic director and a seductive rival, Nina's grip on reality slips, plunging her into a waking nightmare. (IMDb)
I had heard before watching Black Swan that it was a counterpart of sorts to one of director Darren Aronofsky's previous films, The Wrestler, which I had really enjoyed.
I had also managed to remain unspoiled for the kind of movie Black Swan is, expecting something similar to The Wrestler and being about the mental and physical punishment those involved go through.
Which, to be fair, is somewhat accurate, although this film definitely focuses on the mental side of things, which is only exacerbated by the extremely fragile psyche of Nina, the main character played by Natalie Portman.
And wow did Portman deserve the Oscar she won for this film, because if her performance hadn't been as exactingly perfect as her character desperately wished to be, then the movie just wouldn't have worked at all.
It isn't a exaggeration to say that Black Swan turns into a full-on horror film as Nina's mental health nosedives under the pressure she faces, with more than a helping of influence from Perfect Blue, which is no bad thing by any means.
Black Swan is a great film that'll have you wondering just what the hell is going and what's real, much like the main character - and you can figure it out if you really pay attention. [9/10]
GAMES
Done and dusted already, proving just as comfortably enjoyable as it was the first time.
Would love a sequel, or at least another story set in the same world.
Death Stranding
Past the first area, past the first boss fight, and enjoying but not loving it so far.
It helps that it's easy to break up sessions after completing a delivery though, so I'm almost certain to see it through to the end as I slowly chip my way through 1-2 deliveries at a time.
Also currently playing: Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020)
TV
Nothing new started yet, although it might be time for a little break from Star Wars TV after finishing Andor before I continue on with Rebels up next in the timeline, although I haven't chosen what will plug that gap for me.
Maybe something short, which shouldn't be too hard these days...
