Idiocracy

Proof that a great premise doesn't necessarily make for a great movie.

Here's what I've been watching and playing over the last seven days...
MOVIES
Idiocracy
Movie summary: Corporal Joe Bauers, a decidedly average American, is selected for a top-secret hibernation program but is forgotten and left to awaken to a future so incredibly moronic that he's easily the most intelligent person alive. (IMDb)
I can't say that I was disappointed after watching Idiocracy, because I never expected it to live up to its memetic reputation.
What I can say is that I didn't enjoy it because it's just not that good of a movie - it's especially hard to swallow as the director Mike Judge's follow-up to Office Space, which is excellent.
If you've been on the internet for any amount of time over the last decade, you've probably seen images, gifs and clips of this movie all over the place, especially when being compared to the United States, and that feels like its best level.
Idiocracy isn't really a movie, it's a meme generation machine.
For a movie with a running time of 84 minutes, it's almost impressive how little meat on the bones there is here once you accept the premise of the future being filled with morons.
There will be those who make the oft-repeated joke that this film is actually a documentary - and there certainly are elements that can be used to compare with how the real world has changed (for the worse) over the last decade - but there's not really much substance beyond the surface level jokes about how moronic life is 500 years into the future.
I can't recommend watching Idiocracy and would instead suggest just seeking out clips on YouTube, or maybe watching a reaction video of someone else watching this movie instead - at least that way they'll hopefully cut out most of the boring stuff for you.
Idiocracy doesn't feel like a movie - nor a documentary! - it feels like someone had a great idea for a sketch on a comedy show and dragged it out for 1.5 hours. [3/10]
GAMES
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
I think I'm near the end of Act II now - at least I hope I am - and this game is starting to wear a little thin.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard
If this wasn't almost certainly the last Dragon Age game, I would've stopped playing by now, but I do just want to see the franchise out before it's finally laid to rest.
Also currently playing: Batman: Arkham City, Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020), Poker Night at the Inventory
TV
Okay, so I haven't started watching The Mandalorian yet because I got distracted by old episodes of Top Gear, but I will definitely be writing about the return to Star Wars TV next week.
