Things get better and better until they get worse again.

Torra Doza and Kazuda Xiono - from Star Wars: Resistance

Here's what I've been watching and playing over the last seven days...

MOVIES

Still a great movie and hey, look at the main bad guy is: a rich executive fucking around with dangerous machines that have shitty AI... how prescient...

Yes, a super violent Paul Verhoeven double bill this week!

And look at who the (real) bad guys are: fascists who start a war so their idiotic supporters don't notice how shit their lives are... again, how prescient... or at least it would be if this didn't keep happening throughout history and humanity never learning the fucking lesson.

GAMES

007 First Light

Onto the seventh mission now and... I'm not really enjoying it all that much.

90% of the game is genuinely good or better, but that last 10% is absolutely terrible - will take a major upswing in quality consistency and design choices for me to view this game as anything other than simply decent.

Then there's this game, where any frustrations are over in seconds and forgotten about in minutes because it's so bloody good and still comfortably in my top 10 games of all time.

Also currently playing: Batman: Arkham City, Disco Elysium, Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020)

TV

Star Wars: Resistance, Season 1, Episodes 6-11

Episode 6, "The Children from Tehar”

My favourite episode so far and what I wish the show had been like from the beginning, with a decent story about keeping child survivors out of the hands of the First Order – more like this please. [8/10]

Episode 7, “Signal from Sector Six”

Another good, if insubstantial, adventure with Poe Dameron returning and a possible love interest for BB8? [7/10]

Episode 8, “Synara’s Score”

And the quality streak continues with an episode entirely dealing with fending off a pirate attack – it’ll be interesting to see the fallout when Tam learns about why the attack happened when it did. [8/10]

Episode 9, "The Platform Classic”

Another good episode – this time centred around another race – but the extreme focus on Yeager and his brother meant that it wasn’t quite as fun as the one in episode 2. [7/10]

Episode 10, “Secrets and Holograms”

A bit of a mess this time – these episodes aren’t long enough to balance character work, a reveal of a character’s shady past and move the overall arc of the show forward at the same time. [4/10]

Episode 11, “Station Theta Black”

Another adventure with Poe along that was enjoyable enough without being anything special – but it was so, so good to hear Leia’s theme again! [6/10]

I'm really hoping things pick up again, because that run from episodes 6-9 gave me such hope for this show.

More to come next week...
