The court finds this game to be... lacking.

A soldier of Kyros - from Tyranny

Here's what I've been watching and playing over the last seven days...

MOVIES

Spotlight

I could watch this movie once a week and never get tired of it - probably the best-made and most watchable film about such a horrible subject matter ever produced.

GAMES

Tyranny

Game summary: The grand war between good and evil is over - and the forces of evil, led by Kyros the Overlord, have won. (IMDb)

I'm going to be upfront about this and admit that Tyranny didn't click for me at all.

And considering that this is a choice-heavy RPG with the rather unique premise of playing the role of enforcer for the Big Bad of the setting, that's quite strange as it sounds like something I should've really enjoyed.

I will say that I do think time and money during development may have been a factor, as Tyranny does have an oddly unfinished feel to it.

Take the voice acting for example: I'd guess that less than 20% of the dialogue is voiced, but what has been voiced seems to be at random and that the developers ran out of time and/or money to complete it to a consistent level.

There'll be a big event happen in the story and your party will want to speak to you about, but not all of them will have their opinions voiced; and random lines in personal conversations revealing backstory just show up too.

To be fair, I wasn't too bothered about the party members anyway, as none of them were particularly interesting or engaging to me, and the voice acting there is did nothing to improve my opinion.

Even the story in Tyranny isn't particularly interesting either, with two of the Overlord's lieutenants clashing and you being assigned the task of resolving the problem.

Honestly, I'm struggling to write about Tyranny because I don't really have much to say about it, with the gameplay - interesting spell-crafting system aside - being pretty bland, the characters and dialogue not being of much interest.

And my total playtime is 32 hours (2 aborted attempts in previous years, and this final push to complete the damn thing!) so you can't say I didn't give it a proper chance either!

Each time I started a game, I hoped that it would all just click into place, but it never did and I can honestly say I have no interest in ever playing it again.

The thing is, I can very much see how Tyranny would work for some people - especially those who like min-maxing characters - but I'll probably forget most of the time I spent playing it before too long, as I couldn't wait for it to be over.

I didn't enjoy my time with Tyranny at all, with the few sparks of enjoyment overwhelmed by how boring and satisfying an experience it is to play. [3/10]

TV

I still haven't started M.O.D.O.K. yet thanks to finishing not only Tyranny, but Sorcery! Parts 1 & 2 (which I will write about next week), but I have a long weekend coming up, which seems an ideal time to get into it.
